Artist's Statement

I feel that imagery can often evoke more emotions and thoughts than other forms of communication. For that reason I use a visual format to express my ideas about the world.

Most of the work I have done is in the medium of photography. I am captivated by photography because it gives me the ability to take a picture and instantly capture an image and sometimes an emotion. I also enjoy using electronic media to manipulate an image and create something entirely new. The way that time-based media, such as video, can connect with the viewer also interests me. Video, especially, has a uniquely powerful effect on people in our culture. It surrounds us constantly, but people are still drawn to it. In the art world video is unusual because it allows the artist to work with sound and multiple images all in one medium.

I think that photography and electronic media are in some ways more precise media for me to convey my concepts. They allow me to create a more exact replica of what I imagine, while in drawing or painting, for example, the original image can change drastically in the execution of the piece. However, photography and electronic media have a flexibility that allows me to change an image after I create it, which is an important element of artistic expression. I also feel that these kinds of media can create a very different, and powerful experience for the viewer. This is partially due to the realism involved in both media. The subject matter, even when abstracted, is created from a real object, setting, animal, or person. I think when people see images of something that is real they feel a more immediate and conscious connection to what they see.

I see art as a way to express thoughts and emotions that are more powerful than words can convey. My goal as an artist is to create imagery that is both visually appealing and intellectually compelling for the viewer.
